Former Gunners teammate Ian Wright has led the tributes for Campbell who was part of the Arsenal side that won the Premier League and FA Cup double in 1998

Former Arsenal and Everton striker Kevin Campbell has died aged 54.

The news was confirmed by Arsenal in a statement released on Sunday morning.

"We are devastated to learn that our former striker Kevin Campbell has died after a short illness," the statement read.

"Kevin was a popular figure at Highbury during his time with the club and made a significant contribution to our success in the 1990s. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him."

Campbell began his career at Arsenal in 1989 and went on to make over 100 appearances for the club, scoring 59 goals.

He was part of the Arsenal side that won the Premier League and FA Cup double in 1998.

Campbell also played for Everton, Nottingham Forest, Leicester City and Watford.

He won one cap for England in 1993.

Tributes have been paid to Campbell by former teammates and opponents.

"I'm devastated to hear the news about Kevin Campbell," said Ian Wright.

"He was a great teammate and a lovely man. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time."

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said: "Kevin Campbell was a fantastic striker and a great professional.

"He was a key member of our team that won the double in 1998.

"I am very saddened to hear of his passing and my thoughts are with his family and friends."
